Photoshop in many ways is a major enhancement over the original Adobe Photoshop, although I feel that it falls short of features introduced in Adobe Photoshop Elements.
Be sure to check out Chapters 16 and 17 to find out about the best tools for creating graphics for web and print media.
Gimp
Gimp is a beginner friendly image manipulation program that is similar to Photoshop in capabilities.
It differs from Photoshop in that it is quite limited in the programs it supports and features it has, but it’s a good place to start because it’s free and light-weight. The interface is very basic, but if you stick to the features and tools in the program, it’s quite capable.
Kodak Photo CD Pro II
Kodak Photo CD Pro II is a much more complex image manipulation program than Photoshop or Gimp, and it’s much more of a learning curve. It’s not a web graphics program, but it’s useful for many things: manipulating photos and creating print templates.
Adobe Photoshop Elements
Elements is a web graphics program that is similar to Photoshop with an emphasis on ease of use for beginners. You can save graphics to images, videos, Flash movies, and HTML code. Elements can create HTML code for web pages. You can print your work or save the results as a printer driver.

How to Use
Photoshop Elements is available for Mac and Windows (versions available in Apple and Microsoft stores respectively). Download the latest version of Photoshop Elements for Mac or Windows from the Adobe website.
The first thing you need to do after installing Photoshop Elements is to connect to the internet for updates.
To open Photoshop Elements click the ‘Create Document’ button in the navigation bar.
Click on the image you want to change.
Click the ‘Edit’ button on the bottom left of the interface, from which you can choose the tools available for editing the image. There are a number of functions available in Photoshop Elements (see below).
To crop or resize the image, click on the Crop Toolbox (in the Tools panel, on the left hand side), from where you can make selections around the edges of the image.
You can use the tools in the toolbox to manually change the size and position of objects in your image such as cropping borders and the size and position of a person for example.
To add text, click the ‘Text’ toolbar button, which will be on the right hand side.
The pen tool is an essential tool for editing text in Photoshop Elements. Click and move the tool to select the font, choose the color and size of the text, then press ‘enter’ to add text to an existing image, or create a new one.
You can use the paintbrush tool to create a new layer from scratch.
To add an outline, use the pen tool to select the new layer, then click the ‘Pencil’ tool and change the color and size of the outline.
To colour or lighten or darken or change the opacity of the layer, use the ‘Eyedropper’ tool (on the Tools toolbar).
To merge layers, select ‘Smart Objects’ from the options available for layers, then click the ‘Merge Down’ button.
To delete a layer, click the arrow next to the layer in the Layers panel on the left, and select the ‘Delete’ icon.
When you are finished editing, click the ‘File’ icon in the bottom left of the interface. You can choose to save the document to a local drive (used for offline editing), in the cloud (used for editing offsite), or to a USB drive.

Alejandro Mudd, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman for the University of Miami Hurricanes, completed a social justice grant titled “No More: Rethink Racism” for the University of Miami. In the video above, Alejandro discusses his campaign.
Mudd joined the University of Miami football team as a center for the 2015 season. Last year, Mudd was a member of the football team, but did not play. He changed his commitment to the University of Miami when the football program’s head coach, Mark Richt, was fired.
The video has been viewed 3,700 times in the last two days.
In the video, Mudd says the following:
“I wanted to make this video to start a conversation about a problem that society has to face. No More: Rethink Racism. I’m a strong black man. I was raised by strong black parents. I love my black family. I was in a majority of black neighborhoods in high school. I knew how to be in those environments. I’ve never had a racist comment directed at me. So for me to do this video and have an audience that was racially mixed is something that could make a difference. It could make a difference in the Miami community and in the black community. And I want to help it do that.”
Mudd explains, “It’s definitely something that doesn’t happen in the Black and White community. You don’t usually have people that come together for the black and the white community. But I’m hoping that we can provide that opportunity.”
Mudd talks about the motivation for the “No More” project. He says the project is important to him because of the words his father used to tell him:
“My dad told me, ‘You know what you have to be willing to do in life is to be people in charge. Because you have to go in and sometimes there will be things in your life that seem ridiculous to you but if you take that step and you step in and you make the decision, you can make a difference for somebody.'”
“And when I heard my dad speak those words, I just said I want to be a leader. He instilled that in me. And this is a platform, this is an opportunity, to be a leader and to change the world for those young men.”

Kurps noted, “It makes sense that DuPont is a leader in natural product research because we have long been one of the largest producers of flavoring and fragrance ingredients, providing the raw materials for flavor and fragrance companies to use to create products such as cosmetics, drugs, and beverages. DuPont is also one of the world’s leading producers of ingredients for pharmaceutical applications.”
What also is a trend is the growth of enzymatic catalysis, and DuPont has been investing in catalysis for years.
“We are seeing new catalysts and enzyme technology on the horizon that will play an important role in meeting the increasing demand for new products,” Kurps said.
Along with the increasing focus on food and flavors, Kurps said there is growing demand in other sectors, such as agriculture, where herbicides could be replaced with more natural products.
The expansion of natural products is part of a growing trend to increase use of renewable energy and reduce the use of fossil fuels.
For example, DuPont is working with the Dutch government and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to develop use of flue gas as a source of carbon dioxide for use in the formation of oil.
“Other companies are investigating various strategies for producing ethanol from organic compounds found in spent products from corn, wheat, and other crops. Biofuel firms also are developing potential uses for the carbon dioxide that would otherwise be emitted as a by-product of energy production,” Kurps said. “DuPont is doing research with partners on catalysts that allow conversion of lignin, a non-food-grade renewable resource to produce chemicals with commercial significance.”
DuPont is investing in ways to increase efficiency to make products more cost-effective, Kurps said.
“In our most recent tax reform, we wrote-off capital investments in one of our key supply chains, increasing the impact of the tax credit by up to 100 percent of the cost of a capital project,” he said. “We are also looking for new ways to increase the efficiency of our processes, including by
