Elois is a curious and young chat bot that has the tendency to answer many often asked questions (such as how to convert currencies, convert time zones etc). In its most frequent method of messaging, Elois simply responds with the given query, usually preceded with a question mark.
Elois is a mostly informal conversation, and as such, any standard IRC rules (such as restricting the number of consecutive punctuation characters) are ignored. Examples of some of the questions Elois usually answers are: “How are you?”, “Sorry, but I’m fairly busy right now”, “What’s the capital of UK?”, “Are you worried that I’ll replace your mother?”
If Elois doesn’t answer a question, it usually responds with an explanation, like this: “Sorry, I cannot help you with that. I need some time to work through the definition of ‘currency’, and to go through the whole list of time zones.” Alternatively, Elois is occasionally good with recognizing some common terms and will do some extra checking to help. It might usually respond with “I’m sorry, Elois does not know that term” or something similar, if it cannot find the answer.
Often, Elois will try to find a decent conversation going on and participate in it. Elois usually ignores any profanity and should be safe for all but the most vicious chatters.

Elois is a bot for the game Second Life that can do a few things.

Elois can:

• Convert amounts from one currency to another.

• Find the time zone for a given location.

• Find the current time for a given location.

Elois can’t:

• Translate messages from one form to another.

• Edit and save information in Second Life.

• Look up news about Second Life.

• Look up information about Second Life.

• Make your own sounds.

Configuring Elois

If you want to use a new command, add an Elois.mkv file to the configuration/scripts directory (by default this is ~/.elois) with the following contents:

Some example Elois scripts are included in the default configuration. Some example Elois config files are included with the Elois distribution. In particular the example config file ~/config/eloisrc contains some example commands, Elois shortcuts and the location of some other config files.

Changing the Executable

The configuration files are in a flat text format and thus are difficult to edit directly. The simplest way to change them is to add a line into a.xprofile or.xrc file in the config/scripts directory. For example if you wanted to change the executable of the currency conversion commands you could add the following line to the file ~/.xprofile:

I’d suggest check out Dyalog’s setlist which is the successor to IRC bots. It’s a set of tools specifically for irc bots written in python.
