A team of experienced engineers went through 20-plus hours of data, using it to develop an engine that simulates high-intensity real-world football physics on a game engine. Their work saw them create an engine that provides a more nuanced feeling of touch, closer to that experienced in the real world. It’s a new system, and it can take only 15 minutes to adjust and train. FIFA Interactive Days is the event that introduces all these improvements to players and developers, and it kicks off today in San Francisco. As you may have guessed from the slightly unintelligible name, FIFA Interactive Days is a fancy word for a video game industry festival. Attendees are invited to a jam-packed lineup of talks, discussions and demos featuring the FIFA community – which, in the 20-year history of FIFA, represents a pretty sizeable user base. We got up close and personal with the developers behind some of the best-known FIFA games to find out what it’s like to create football on the big screen. What kind of FIFA did you play as a child? Adam Tessler: I played FIFA Soccer, the original release from Sega Sports and later EA Sports for Xbox. I’ve been a big FIFA fan ever since. What about FIFA 06 on the PlayStation 3? Was it an eye-opener to you? Erik Reino: Yeah, I’m sure it was! I’ve been working on this game for about a year with Erik Larsen. FIFA 06 and FIFA 07 were great football games, but they didn’t bring the sense of realism that FIFA games had in the past. What was your take on that? Erik Reino: When I was first introduced to the game, I saw the graphics and I was like “This is a step back for me,” even if it was better than FIFA Soccer. But for me, real-life football is better than video game football. Reino: When I think about the development of FIFA on consoles, I started to think about how I could get more realism into the game. I did my job with research, but football science was such a difficult thing to get, so I learned that a lot on my own by working with players and reading a lot of papers and books. I was inspired by the research of Major League Soccer teams. For

FIFA (pronounced “fif-a”) is a series of video games that have been produced by EA since 1994. The series simulates the rules of association football (soccer) and was first released for the PC. There are currently four games in the FIFA series (FIFA 20, FIFA 19, FIFA 18, FIFA 17) and with the upcoming release of the FIFA Ultimate Team Career Mode, there are six games in the series at the time of writing. The FIFA series has developed one of the most recognisable sports franchises. Players have played the game since the series first release and it is still considered to be an icon among sports games. FIFA has over 200 million players worldwide. How is FIFA controlled? There are two methods of control in FIFA: Local and Online. Local – This is the default control method in the game and is the most popular for PC and Xbox gamepads. Locally, the host player is in control of one player at a time but can control multiple players using gamepad stick controls. For example, pressing the left stick will move the player diagonally whereas pressing the right stick will move them vertically. Players can be controlled by the host or by an AI (player controlled by a computer). There is not a distinction between amateurs and professionals. Online – There is an option to play online matches and this is what the majority of people play FIFA with. Online gameplay is played on a server browser in which players can choose between customised teams. FIFA’s default game mode is FIFA 19 and that is what the majority of players play, but there are also modes for FIFA 07, FIFA 10, FIFA 11 and FIFA 15. How to control players? Local – To control a player click on their name on the team sheet or alternatively press the Control key, if gamepad is being used. Online – To control a player press the Control key when selecting the player in the team selection menu. Where is FIFA played? FIFA is played on multiple platforms. Desktop – This is the PC version of the game. FIFA on PlayStation – The PC and PS4 versions of the game are identical except for the installation files which are on a USB stick for the PS4 version. FIFA on Xbox – The Xbox version of the game includes additional features for playing on Kinect. How to unlock the Career Mode in FIFA? The Career Mode
