Asia Bibi has been at the forefront of this campaign. She is currently in an extremely vulnerable position due to her work as a daily wage labourer at a Christian-owned grocery. In 2010, she was arrested on charges of blasphemy, but was acquitted by Pakistan’s Supreme Court only in 2018.

The protests saw the number of arrests of the participants, including activists, journalists, politicians, members of civil society, as well as Christian and Muslim, increase.

The rally in support of Asia Bibi was organised in a government complex where participants were ordered to leave the premises. They proceeded to the Pakistan parliament compound, where they were tear-gassed, before continuing on to the Supreme Court, where the police again attacked the participants.

Some protesters attempted to stage a sit-in inside the Supreme Court compound and some were taken into custody.

The rallies come at a time when extremist groups in Pakistan are hoping to use the recent nationwide protests and rising violence to their advantage.
