Alter Ego is a lightweight and handy application that makes certain programs such as browsers or e-mail clients run safer.

Alter Ego is a Linux application and works with all major Linux distributions.
We recommend that you install it on the same system that you installed the programs that you want to limit.

We recommend that you install Alter Ego on Linux systems since it requires root privileges.

Since it does not install any user configuration files in the installed system, you can uninstall Alter Ego when you have no need for it anymore.

Alter Ego installs two files (in /usr/local/bin):

elalte.sh: This script runs the application with the privileges of the user specified in the configuration file.

Run Alter Ego:

Open the Alter Ego configuration file.

Select either the local machine or the network machine on which you wish to run the application.

Run the selected operating system from the context menu.

Now, if you select the the “Run with privileges of…” option, a dialog box will appear informing you that the application is running with restricted rights.
It will also ask you to confirm that you understand the risks.
If you confirm it, the application will run with restricted rights.
