History

AutoCAD 1.0 was released on December 16, 1982. Originally the name of the product was ChangeaCAD. The acronym stood for Change AutoCAD Auto-CAD, or the words, “Change an AutoCAD Auto-CAD.” It was later renamed ChangeaCAD by Autodesk.

The first version was for the Macintosh II, II+ and Quadra 650. The program was developed by Stephen Farr and based on the PC-DOS operating system and the 3D Studio BASIC (BASIC for Professional Graphic Systems) programming language. At that time, the program was only available for the Macintosh, but AutoCAD 1.0 was renamed to AutoCAD for the Macintosh. It also had an improved mouse interface.

The first version was originally created for the Macintosh only. Autodesk developed a very early Windows version, although this version did not ship until version 1.1. Another early windowed version, the VSD version, was also released.

The first version of AutoCAD was targeted mainly at architectural and mechanical engineering. There was no 2D drawing facility. The first release included basic graphics such as drawing elements, layers, multiple views, printing, and screen cropping. It supported most of the commercially available plug-ins (and later versions would add support for more). It was the first professional CAD program to use an object-based rather than component-based architecture.

The 1.0 release included 16 different functions and 2D views. The program was slow and had an idiosyncratic user interface. Many of the functions were useful for 2D drawing, but not so much for engineering.
