Most people who want to use Photoshop have no idea how to even start. The Layers panel

The Layers panel enables you to create and manipulate layers. Each layer is a separate, visually unique area that’s basically a copy of the area that it covers.

The Channel Mixer

The Channels panel

The Channels panel enables you to enhance and create multichannel images. You can change what’s inside layers, modify colors, edit layers, create transparency in and out of layers, and use masks to blend one layer over another.

The History panel

The History panel enables you to revert to an earlier version of an image or to restore an image to its original state. A History panel can be a powerful tool for making multiple revisions of an image.

The Tools panel

The Tools panel enables you to choose the tools to use and to view the tools that you’ve applied. As I explain in the later section “Exploring the Tools panel,” to make more sense of the number of tools available, it helps to think of Photoshop as having a lot of categories, and all the tools in that category. For example, you can think of the brush tool as the category of tools for painting, and you can think of the Adjustments tool as the category of tools for correcting and enhancing the colors of an image.

I discuss each of the components in greater detail in the following sections.

Import and Open a File

Let’s start off by importing an image into Photoshop Elements. First, open the folder that you want to import images from.

In the left-hand menu, click on File and then Import and select a file or a folder with the desired images.

From there you will have two options, either open the folder or drag the files directly from your PC to the file palette.

If you want to work on a separate image, a new document will open.

If you want to edit or print an image, this is where you want to be.

Edit and Enhance Images

Let’s start with basic edits.

Basic edits in Photoshop Elements

Most of the features mentioned in this article are available with Photoshop Elements as well. However, because Photoshop Elements is designed for image editing, you will need to know a few basics to edit your images in ways that might not be available in Photoshop. These are the most common ones.

Import the White Balance Tool

This tool is available in Photoshop Elements as well but you can’t change the color temperature directly. You will have to use the sliders to adjust the color temperature manually. In Photoshop Elements, you will need to open the editing toolbox and then click the white balance drop down box. Click on the menu bar to the right to view the white balance menu options. Here you will find the Color Temperature option that lets you adjust the color temperature of your image. Select the menu bar again and click on White Balance Tool. You will be able to select one of the nine presets or select custom. To change to custom, click on the bottom slider and select between standard light or standard dark. You can select from a range of temperatures from warm to cool. For example, you can pick a red filter to warm the color of your image or a blue filter to cool your image.
