Blindspot will provide blind or partially-sighted screen reader users with an accessible Windowless application that focuses on delivering access to the Spotify service. With Blindspot, you can make sure that feedback through already running screen readers, or optionally Microsoft’s SAPI engine is fast and continuos.
There are some functions in the wiki and the readme that are not fully implemented. I have not tested all of the function in the wiki or the readme and I have not tested the Windows version of the software. I cannot guarantee that any of these functions will work or may break something for everyone. Please report any issues you find in the thread. If this program is a huge success, I will most likely update it to the next version of the software. The theory The application communicates with Spotify through the web API and can work on Windows / Mac / Linux. The interface is completely accessible and only uses Javascript. A screenshot of the window is on the Spotify website. The API The main API for this application is found here: Spotify has a clear documentation on how to get started with their service. The actual implementation To get the user account (basic auth only), ask for permission and callback. /api/account /api/token The /token endpoint returns an access token which is used to communicate with the service. The only requests you make for /token are as shown here (access_token = “YOUR_TOKEN”). Blindspot is an accessible Windowless application, which provides users with a kind of a ‘Windows for blind people’ that focuses on providing access to the Spotify service. Blindspot is integrated with Microsoft’s SAPI engine, and therefore, could be installed with standard Windows applications. Blindspot Design: In the image below, we can see the main application window of Blindspot. The main screen of the application is divided in two side-by-side panels that show the caption and description of one of the filtered content. The filter panel is expanded in order to provide more items for the user to access. Both panels have Visual States that provide the user with a feedback when the content has been filtered and the window has been updated. In the application above, the small letters on the left panel, are actually buttons that provide users with a custom caption and description of one of the items/track of the filtered content. These items also provide a link to the detailed track view through available audio description. Blindspot Screen reader Feedback: In the screen below, we can see the experience that any screen reader could get by using Blindspot. As the screenshot shows, we have a streaming window with filtered content. The title of the window as been recorded with Voicesox’s engine. Whenever the content of the window changes, the captions and the descriptions in the left and right panels are updated. Blindspot Screen Reader Blindspot Technical Requirements: Blindspot will be released as a desktop application, and therefore, it will use the Microsoft SAPI 5.1.0 engine to deliver access to the Spotify service. The main target platforms are Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 (32-bit only). Notes on Software: Blindspot has been developed using C#, XAML, and a tiny bit of WPF. The application is integrated with Microsoft’s SAPI engine, and, consequently, has been tested against all major screen readers. The application has been unit tested and deliverable has been approved to be released in public. The build version we are releasing is version 0.2.0.
