My first time in Drakensang Online, the online component seemed rather slow at first — even though the game maps and character customization choices were among the best I’ve seen in online RPG. While the most powerful characters were overall strong and even enjoyed devastating number of hits, a few of the less powerful ones were inexplicably having a harder time. But, after some time, it became apparent just how much progress I’d made. I could string together combos that felt satisfying without much difficulty, and quickly made my way through the game’s 14 floors of story and 20 floors of arena challenges. This near-instant level of frustration with the gameplay spikes is actually something Drakensang Online does pretty well — it’s a challenge, and that’s difficult to accomplish in a game that’s supposed to be an online RPG. There was also a welcome surprise in the game’s multiplayer, which supports players’ chosen resolutions and houses their kills. This is important because often, RPGs and online RPGs force you into public games that others might happen to be playing, so having this function is a relief, and it adds to the feeling of accessibility.

Nefarious has tried to keep the story of Drakensang close to Drakensang, as its 10-hour story arc provides the bulk of a character’s experience in-game. The story lets each update be manageable, but moves along at a clip. The pacing and level of difficulty you’d expect from an MMO is here, though — needless to say, it doesn’t feel like such and will have you thinking “Ugh — it’s been an hour and a half already? That’s taking way too long.” The story itself is likable and enjoyable if you can find the time for it — it’s quite compelling, and at its best, Drakensang Online really shines, since it’s not bogged down by all that RPG stuff that slows it down.
