The nido, also called a nidus or nest, is a bird’s nest that is the home of a colony of birds. The female bird lays the nest, and incubates the eggs. The nest is a cup shaped structure built of twigs and grasses, lined with feathers, hair, mosses or lichens, and sometimes reinforced by small sticks. The nest is surrounded by a thick layer of guano. The nest is usually spherical, cylindrical, or peanut shaped. Nids may be built by warblers, wrens, or the Capercaillie, another bird species that builds a large communal nest.
The chicks feed inside the nest, but later emerge and leave as brood parasites.
Nidification can be recognized through infrared images and may be used to monitor bird colonies. Nidification may be a response to global climate change.
