History Of Tanks: Tanks originated in the trenches of World War I, where trench warfare offered limited opportunities for the infantry to shoot at a moving target at long range. Eventually, the infantry would be pulled back to new defensive positions or reorganize in deeper trenches, where artillery could not penetrate. The doctrine was to hold the ground, break the enemy front line, and then push him back with overwhelming force. Infantry fought hand-to-hand.
