A spellcaster is defined as a character that can cast magic in a fantasy rpg. As such, if you want to add something similar to spellcasting to your game you have two options: Take inspiration from other fantasy rpgs that have this, or Create an unique spellcasting system that you don’t have to worry about other games taking inspiration from. In either case, the spells should have some restrictions to them, but not restrictions that game-breaking. In particular, casting a spell should cost something (a spell slot), and should take some time. TLDR: Single-Target spells are boring. Spellcasters are much more fun. Single-Target spells should be limited to accuracy and/or to damage. If spells are truly important, they should have to be purchased with in-game currency. Do NOT allow “Charge a spell” (eg: spell casting is done by charging), or similar things that would allow a spellcaster to be able to cast all their spells at once. Or, if you must allow charges (they’re more common in ranger classes), make charges to be very scarce, and have a charge capacity that’s destroyed by certain actions. Make spells to be locked, so that one cannot cast a spell of a different type than the one they learned. Make each spell to have a level (or power or whatever), and that spells in higher levels cast with greater power. Make spells
