Coastal rivers and estuaries can be highly stratified, and the freshwater-derived water from these relatively confined environments often forms a ‘dead zone’ due to negative buoyancy. This zone is typically dominated by marine phytoplankton, which concentrate nitrate and sulfate in order to drive oxygen consumption via photosynthesis. The anoxic conditions create anoxic conditions, and any dissolved substrates are therefore reduced. While this process is efficient in marine environments, where diatomic gases are generally the only electron acceptor, it is less effective in aerobic environments such as the ocean, where oxygen and hydrogen are the primary acceptor. Here, we show that the reduction of sulfate and nitrate leads to the formation of carbonates from organic carbon, creating a sink for the carbon that is otherwise required for photosynthesis.
