If you’re looking for a good, fun fishing book (one of my favorite subjects), then make a note to check out The Trout Files, written by Joe Palese, the legendary trout fisherman and editor of Mountain Sports Magazine. Palese has written two previous books: Trout On The Fly and Trout, the Flyer, and has spent a career battling the trout—from the manning to the net, from the hook to the line, from the buttonhook to the bait to the fish.

In The Trout Files, Palese’s focuses on the fishing, specifically on getting up and catching fish on streamers, streamer patterns, and other challenging fish. “Trout That Can’t Be Hit” is the subtitle of the book, and I think the phrase alone gives a good idea of the subject matter. The Trout Files is not really a book about techniques or tactics or strategies, it is a book about fishing and fishing for trout in particular. In addition to giving a lot of great tips and techniques, he also includes a good story about a rather early-in-his-fishing-career friend.

My favorite thing about the book is how enjoyable it is to read. It’s not that this book lacks information, but rather that there is so much about the enjoyment of fishing. For instance, he includes a chapter on a trout’s “life zones,” and a great discussion on how to read a trout’s attitude.
