History
AutoCAD was originally developed by the US defense contractor Raytheon. The program was released in December 1982 and was made available as a standalone product by 1983.
Autodesk acquired Autocad in 1993. The program name was changed from Autocad to AutoCAD in 1999, though its core capabilities have not changed since 1983. The application, which is still marketed as AutoCAD, is now developed by a software development subsidiary of Autodesk called Autodesk Labs. The current version is AutoCAD 2016.

If you don’t like the proprietary nature of AutoCAD, there are other free and open source software-based tools. Most of them are general purpose 3D modelling tools, which are not specifically intended to be used for architectural work.
FreeCAD
FreeCAD is a completely free CAD environment, written in Python and released under the GNU GPL v3. FreeCAD is a superset of the product UnderCAD, which was developed by the same author. FreeCAD provides similar functionality to AutoCAD (it has a similar user interface, command language, and file format). However, it is not as popular as AutoCAD and has less plugins for common functions.

Blender is a free, open-source 3D computer graphics software package created by the Blender Foundation.
Blender has a strong focus on animation, rendering, visual effects, and authoring, with some focus on architectural CAD modelling. Other free and open source CAD environments include OpenSCAD, StarCAD, and FreeCAD’s brother tool. They are similar to free and open source tools like Blender and FreeCAD, but some are specifically for architectural CAD models.
OpenSCAD
OpenSCAD is a general purpose open-source CAD platform for all kinds of design. It’s based on the OpenSCAD free CAD platform. This platform provides a full suite of 3D modelling tools, as well as CNC machines and parametric assembly and layout. OpenSCAD is a free project released under the GNU GPL, and the latest release is version 2.x.
