In 1982, The Graphics and Imaging Group (GAG) at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City (UT) was developing an on-screen graphics (OSG) system for design and drafting. UT had only a few large mainframe computers available for CAD, and the CAD staff was spread across several campuses, so the mainframe CAD systems were too slow to meet their CAD needs. In order to produce faster CAD, UT decided to develop their own CAD software, using off-the-shelf components, a new computer network, and a new graphics interface. UT’s OSG system became known as GAG-2 and the new CAD system was called the GAG-2 Drafting System.

The GAG-2 Drafting System

In 1981, the Graphics Resource Center (GRC), a University of Utah facility devoted to developing and distributing graphics software, had developed a system to generate bit-mapped graphics images for CAD and drafting on microcomputers using the GRCOS graphics technology. UT later modified the graphics technology and developed the GRAX graphics driver.

In the early 1980s, digital computer graphics could be very slow. The term bit-mapped, or bit-cell mapping, referred to the use of an electronic device to build pixels (one pixel = one bit) in a single memory location. The GRCOS graphics driver supported two memory technologies, EPROM (Electronic Programmable Read-Only Memory) and SRAM (Static Random Access Memory). Both types of memory had a high memory access rate, but EPROM required additional processing to write data. EPROM is used in many computer systems to store data and instructions. However, most home computers use RAM (Random Access Memory) which is faster.

GRCOS (Graphics Resource Center Operating System)

In the early 1980s, UT’s graphics technology, called the Graphic Resource Center Operating System (GRCOS), was first designed and developed by GRC. GRC’s user interface technology was named the UIx interface. GRCOS, UIx, and GRAX were developed by The Graphics Resource Center (GRC) at the University of Utah (UT) in the early 1980s. GRC was a division of the University’s Computational Sciences Department.
