Roblox is a website/game-hosting platform that has been used since 2004 to share games created by anyone in the world. The company allows anyone to make games online using a simple drag-and-drop editor. The games may be played in their web browser or on compatible Android and iOS devices. Since its launch in 2004, Roblox has become the second-most used website on the internet, behind Facebook.[1]
The platform has the third-highest number of monthly active users worldwide, with a userbase of over 164 million.[2] In 2012, it was estimated that Roblox hosted about 10 billion video views per month, and by 2017, the site was hosting about 5 billion video views per month.[3]
In 2013, the company signed a partnership with Microsoft to bring Roblox to Windows Phone, Android, and iOS devices.[4] In 2015, Roblox launched a mobile app to allow users to play games from their mobile phone or tablet.[5]
Despite being categorized as a game-hosting platform rather than a social network, Roblox has more than 10 million registered users and is used for games, movies, music, and live video broadcasting. By 2014, Roblox had been linked to over 200,000 programs and games.[6] As of August 2020, more than 1.2 million programs are available, and Roblox Corporation claims that users on average play 9 hours daily.[7]
In 2014, Roblox was chosen as the official game-hosting platform for the 2014 Winter Olympics. The company also released an official Olympic theme song, “We Are One (Olympic Anthem),” for users to create music for.[8]
History
Founding and initial years
In 2004, David Baszucki and Erik Cassel founded Roblox Corporation to develop the online game-hosting platform. The original Roblox version was designed to allow players to make their own games and distribute them to other players. The first title included with Roblox was Mobile Blox, a sandbox game that was also available as a download for Windows Mobile devices.[9] Mobile Blox was built using the LÖVE game engine developed by Erik Cassel. The game platform was then released in January 2006 as a web browser-based product. As of February 2019, Roblox has been downloaded and played by over 20 million people, with more than 3.2 billion play sessions.[10]
