The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for facilitating the administration of fluid, particularly parenteral administration.
Devices are known which are constructed for the administration of a fluid to a patient from a supply tube or catheter. The fluid may be a drug, or may be blood when the device is used to administer blood from a source to a patient. The device is intended to produce continuous flow of fluid through the supply tube or catheter and to a patient. In many instances, it is desirable that the patient be conscious, even if only for a portion of the time during which the infusion is taking place. The patient can receive and, if desired, even administer other fluids or medicines during this time. In order to avoid having to terminate the infusion completely, intermittent flow is provided. That is, the flow of fluid is interrupted for a specified period of time and then resumed. The rate of flow of the fluid to the patient may be very high at any given time, e.g., in the range of about 1-4 liters per hour. It is desirable to have such a rate of flow not exceed a certain volume, e.g., about 500 ml. or about 1 liter per hour.
A number of factors which may affect the ability of the device to provide such intermittent flow may be controlled by the operator. One factor which will affect the ability of the device to provide intermittent flow is the rate of flow which is established between the supply tube or catheter and the patient’s vein. If the rate of flow is too high, the rate of fluid flow through the patient will be increased to the point where the patient may receive more than the prescribed dose. On the other hand, if the rate of flow is too low, or if a patient’s vein is particularly slow in producing a sufficient flow of blood, the interruption in the flow will be excessively long. On the other hand, if a device is provided with a very large capacity, to rapidly fill with fluid and provide a flow rate which is sufficient for providing the prescribed dose, the rate of flow may be too high and will be difficult to control.
In order to provide an optimum rate of flow in the supply tube or catheter, the rate of flow must be selectively varied in the region of the patient’s vein. It will be understood that the patient’s vein may vary widely in size and shape.
