You can install and run Photoshop on your Mac as well as a wide variety of other Unix computers and even the latest versions of Windows.
You can edit individual layers and apply filters and effects, such as blurring, sharpening, color correction, and so on. You can also use Photoshop for more advanced creative workflow such as compositing (putting objects on top of one another). You can use Photoshop for illustration, photo retouching, and creating advertising material. Photoshop is also the tool of choice for many designers who want to see how their art will look in the real world.
Photoshop interfaces can display the image as a raster image (a regular bitmap) and as a vector image (one that’s made up of interconnected geometric shapes). In this chapter, we demonstrate some basic image manipulation techniques with raster images — the default format — but as you will discover in later chapters, you can also work with vector images, such as Illustrator file formats.
## Displaying an Image
Photoshop opens an image in a window in the default mode — a raster image at a size of approximately 800 pixels wide and 500 pixels high. Figure 6-1 shows the familiar default appearance.

To display a raster image, follow these steps:
1. **Click the Open or Open Recent button on the toolbar or press F5 to open the current image.**
If you’re previewing an image for the first time, you’re prompted to select a location to save the file on your hard drive, as shown in Figure 6-1. (If you’ve saved a copy of the file, click Open from the Saved Images option.) Or if the file isn’t open yet, Photoshop makes a copy of the file on your hard drive and saves the copy with a new name.
Your screen is now split in two, as shown in Figure 6-2. The top part of the screen contains the image itself, while the bottom half displays the image controls.

2. **In the Toolbar section, click the image-window controls at the upper right of the window, shown in** **Figure** **6-2**.

The easiest way is to choose the installer from the website. You may have to register on the Adobe website in order to download the installer. If you experience problems downloading or registering, we also have a list of alternative websites you may use.
You may also download the Adobe Photoshop Elements application. You will then have to install the software manually. Follow the installation manual below.

: This object ($z=3.784$) is a faint ($m=24.83\pm0.09$) galaxy which is not lensed. Using the same methodology as mentioned in the previous object, we estimate the lensing mass for this galaxy to be $M_{\rm lens}=2.2_{ -1.4}^{+2.2} \times 10^{10} M_\odot$. The implied value for the shear is $\langle \gamma_1 \rangle =-0.41\pm0.67$ and $\langle \gamma_2 \rangle =0.55\pm0.45$. The associated value of the convergence is $\kappa=0.32_{ -0.25}^{+0.44}$.
